my creative space

In my creative space today I am grateful that I love the process as well as the finished product.

Now that I have mornings back to myself (thank you summer camps!) I’ve been doing more sewing. You’d think that a peaceful house would mean überproductivity, but I find myself spending too much time with my friend Sea M. Ripper.

Maybe it is too quiet?

Have a peek into some other creative spaces over at Kirsty’s blog.

wendy johnson toe up diagonal sock

Is it any surprise that knitting is in my creative space today? I finally cast on the sock that was on my to-do list. When I took it to knitting group tonight, I think everyone was shocked that I didn’t bring a crochet project. I was shocked that most of them had brought crochet projects.

While we’re still on the subject of knitting, let me tell you a little gauge story. A few weeks ago when I had a lot on my mind and life was kind of crazy, I did a gauge swatch for this sock. I got the proper amount of stitches and then abandoned the sock until I was on retreat. Last weekend was so relaxed and peaceful. Can you guess what happened when I cast on? Yep. The sock was huge! I had to go down a needle size and eliminate four stitches. (I refused to go down to a size 0 needle.) Just an example of how our mood and emotions can affect our craft.

progress report: In case you are following along, I’m almost finished that to-do list of mine. The two linen skirts have been hemmed and the drawstring has been converted to an elastic waistband so they hang more evenly. I also took pictures for some etsy listings. Just need to find the time to get them listed. Maybe Friday?

pattern notes: Yarn is Sockittome by Cherry Tree Hill Yarn. Pattern is Diagonal Lace Socks by Wendy Johnson from Socks from the Toe Up. You can download the pattern for free, but make sure to check the errata on ravelry before you start knitting.

messenger bag refashion

In my creative space today I’m finishing up a messenger bag refashion for a friend. This was a really cool project and I’ll have lots more photos for you once it’s delivered.

farmers market sandwich

Also a quick update on the Kind Diet. I haven’t been trying hard to avoid meat and dairy, but I’m finding it pretty easy and fulfilling to eat other things. I also loaded up on lots of wonderful veggies from the Farmers’ Market last weekend. Lunch today was tomato, hummus and grilled zucchini on whole grain bread. Yum!

I’m looking for more reading material on how the food we eat affects our planet. Any suggestions?

my creative space

Today in my creative space is a little mindless crochet. I had started knitting my second charity blanket square (here’s the first one) and it just wasn’t turning out right. It may have had something to do with my daughter messing with my row counter, stealing my pattern and pulling stitches off my needles. I finally gave up and pulled out my crochet hook. She still tries to “help out” with it, but does a lot less undoing with this version.

This photo was taken at one of my favorite places: our screened-in porch. The evenings have been lovely for outside time this week. Speaking of lovely, you should check out the beautiful spaces over at Kirsty’s blog.

After a few weeks of circles, I really needed to get back to squares. I didn’t have anything particular in mind. I just grabbed this little basket of wool that I use for wrapping packages and started making grannies. I’m thinking it will be a bookmark. I need a new one for my summer reading. Speaking of which, look what I happened to spy at the library today: three of my favorite Rs! After just flipping through the pages, I’m already in love.

question: I check out a ton of books from the library on sewing, knitting, crocheting, and vintage/cottage style. I never thought to write reviews of them on my blog, but it just occurred to me that maybe someone out there might be interested. If you are, let me know. I’d love to share some of my favorite books with you!

little amigurumi bear

In my creative space today I’m finishing up the details on a few gifts.

First up is this little teddy bear for my friend Lisa, who is expecting a baby any day now. Lisa is all about cute crochet stuffies, so I figured an amigurumi bear would be perfect.

Want to know the coolest thing about this teddy? She’s made completely out of recycled sweater yarn! Don’t you just love her even more now?

The pattern is from the amigurumi volume of Kyuuto! Japanese Crafts! If you are interested in Japanese craft books, but are nervous about following the diagrams, this is a good place to start. It’s translated into English!

I’m off to finish up some more gifts. You should head on over to Kirsty’s blog for more creative spaces!

taking it easy today

My creative space is filled with other creative folks today. I woke up feeling a little under the weather (ok, a lot under the weather) and decided to take it easy. I spent the day curled up with this blanket, reading my copy of Craft Corps, and working on more of these.

Visit Kirsty’s blog for more creative spaces. I’m off to bed and hope to be feeling more crafty tomorrow.

handmade gifts

Good grief! May is almost half over! You wouldn’t know it by the weather. It feels more like Fall than Spring. Yesterday I realized I’ve got some gift making to do this month. I can’t give too much detail right now, but I’m combining this with some handmade goodies from etsy.com. I’ll do a full reveal after they’ve been gifted.

my creative space

I have this vision of my creative space. In it, there are no piles for my daughter to dig through asking, “Mama, can I use this fabric for a picnic bundle?” She won’t make off with buttons or ribbon from my desk. She definitely won’t be checking out sharp, shiny, pointy objects.

This room doesn’t have a lot of storage space because we sacrificed most of the closet for an angled entry with a french door. Ah, yes. The french door that exposes my works in progress to the rest of the house.

I started this project back in March with a major destash. Since then I’ve been doing little bits in the evenings. Yesterday I got a surge of energy and made some real progress. It took all day. I recycled, donated, rearranged, decluttered and reorganized.

My vision? I think I’m almost there.

Are you sitting down? My creative space is filled with knitting today. Yes, I said knitting. Can you believe it? It’s been awhile.

Our local guild is making squares for charity blankets again. I took a break from this last year, but the year before I met my goal of 12 squares — one a month. I was hoping to meet that goal again in 2010, but here it is almost May and I’m on my first square! We’ll see how many I get done.

There were some lovely creative spaces last week listed on Kirsty’s blog. Did you check them out? You should!

stash and pattern: More acrylic from my thrifted stash. These skeins must multiply when I’m not looking! The patterns are being chosen by the group. This is the January square listed on the Hanks website.
