This friend is getting the full treatment. After re-stuffing and sewing yet another new nose, my daughter convinced me to make a sweater to cover up the bald spots. I survived eight years before getting a request for “doll” clothes. I guess I can’t complain.
I don’t want to jinx anything…
…but I’ve been yarning in public. I think I’m getting my crochet mojo back.
new year, new scarf
I started my new year with a little crochet project. It’s a scarf for a friend’s daughter. The yarn was unraveled from one of her baby sweaters. I tried a few different stitches, but the yarn is so busy, I decided to go with straight double crochet. I’ll be adding a few flowers, too.
How did you start the new year?
crochet gift card sleeve update
I loved how the sock yarn sleeve turned out. For my second try, I picked a yarn with lots of thick and thin weights. Not sure if I’m liking it as much. I’m going to try one more in worsted weight and then post the formula.
I wish I had taken a picture of the completed sleeve with my real camera. The yarn is so beautiful in real life. Alas, I’ve already gifted it. Plus, I promised myself not to stress over perfection. Moving on and trying to stay in the flow.
playing around with crochet gift card sleeves
Last year I sewed a bunch of sleeves and wallets to give with gift cards. Since my sewing machine is still collecting dust, I decided this year to work on a crochet version.
I found a lot of cute patterns on Ravelry, both crochet and knit, but the ones I liked were written for a specific yarn weight. I want to use up little bits of leftovers for this project and don’t feel like dealing with gauge math for every single one.
So, I’m working on a formula, which I will share once I’ve got it figured out.
What are your favorite ways to give gift cards?
new scarf. I was bored.
Last Saturday night my daughter was in bed by 8 pm. My husband was asleep by 8:30. I was bored. I pulled up some concerts on YouTube and started jammin’ out.
Even though Honey Cowl isn’t finished, I wanted to do something with yarn. Something new. Something with a hook.
I grabbed a bag of yarn balls and just started chaining. I may have gone overboard. Toward the end, I decided to make granny scarf. A very long granny scarf, in fact.
It felt good. I missed my hook. Double crochet clusters make me so happy.
my little daisy
I can’t believe my little girl will be bridging to Brownies this week. Next thing I know, she’ll be a second grader! (Actually, in one month!)
In my quest to do one creative thing a day, I asked her to pick something out of my Crochet Embellishments book for me to make for her. She picked a daisy hair tie, of course.
I made it last night and left it on the kitchen table for her. She ran into my room this morning so excited! I need more little creative projects like this. They’re worth so much more than the small amount of time they take.
emergency swift + ball winder
Last night I was knitting while watching a movie and didn’t pay too much attention to my yarn. Today when I pulled my project out at soccer practice, I found I only had a tiny ball left. Luckily, I had a second hank in my bag, but it needed to be wound before I could use it.
I learned this trick from a fellow knitter, and it works like a charm. Untwist the hank and put it around your neck like a necklace. Untie the threads holding it together and find the end. Start winding it into a ball, unlooping around your neck as you go. There may be times where it feels tangled up, but don’t take it off your neck. Just keep winding and unlooping until you’re finished.
I can’t tell you how many times this little trick has helped me. I hope someday it will be helpful to you, too!
quick crochet pinch protection
My daughter is really worried about getting pinched today, so I whipped up a little green hair tie for her. Pattern here. Enjoy!
noro eye candy
What is it about Noro yarn? The colors are so intense. They make any project look exceptionally beautiful.
I was casually browsing the library shelves when I found this book. The pictures are gorgeous. The colors are amazing.
I don’t think I’ll be being buying this for my collection. There aren’t even any patterns that I’m dying to make.
But for the entire time it was checked out, I stared at these pages. I stared at the beautiful photography. I got inspired.
After I finish the Honey Cowl, I just might dig out some Noro from my stash and make something amazing.
