I’m finally casting on the Honey Cowl with my new yarn. Yay!
resource: A friend of mine has been talking up the crochet cast on and I had her show it to me last week at knitting group. It’s nice and stretchy; much better than the long tail, which I tend to do too tight. You can find a tutorial video here.
I’ve had this fabric in my stash for so long that I don’t remember where I found it. It has always been destined for my sister-in-law who loves horses. I always thought I’d make it into a tote bag because it’s a tricky print. Lay it out flat and it’s kind of busy. I never imagined I’d make it into an article of clothing.
But then I happened across a pattern for a fabric infinity scarf and couldn’t stop thinking about it. I dug it out, wrapped it around my neck and you know what? It looked really nice! I liked this pattern so much, I even set aside some brown and black flannel to make a scarf for myself. Now I just need to sew it!

I guess it’s safe to say that I’m addicted to double crochet clusters. Is there a 12 Step Program for that? Here are two more gifts I made for the holidays.
This is the one that started it all. The yarn is from my stash. I’m not 100% sure of the brands, but I can tell there’s some merino wool in there. It is so soft!
I have had this single skein of Manos del Uruguay in my stash for a few years. You know how sometimes you just have to wait for the yarn to speak to you? It finally said “granny cowl” and turned out beautiful.
Coming up: the möbius and a fabric cowl.
I started this cowl just before Christmas. After packing up and sending off gifts for everyone else, I decided to make something for myself. It’s a möbius granny cowl using wool from my stash.
It’s almost finished. My new yarn is calling. I just can’t have one more work in progress. Hope to have final pics soon.
The book in the background is a vegan Indian cookbook. It has lots of slow cooker recipes. Looking forward to trying a few.

It’s been forever since I talked about this cowl. In fact, it took entirely too long to complete. That’s because my daughter fell in love with fleece and decided wool makes her itchy. (Interestingly enough, she still likes her wool hat and mittens.)
I wasn’t sure whether or not I should keep knitting or rip it out, so it sat in the UFO pile for awhile. Then one day I decided to try it on myself. It fits! It’s snug, but definitely not too small. So I finished it up.
Of course now that I’m thinking of keeping it for myself, she mentioned that she’d wear it if I lined it with fleece. I don’t know. I kind of like finally being finished with this project.

Yesterday I started unraveling this sweater. When I detached the neck, I thought, “This would make a beautiful cowl.” I slipped it around my neck. Lovely. I doubled it up. Toasty.
It’s the fastest cowl I’ve ever made. In fact, it kind of looks like the Burberry-inspired cowl by The Garter Girl, which just happened to be on my to-knit list.

I found my daughter’s scarf. It was on the lost and found table at school. She’s no longer wearing it, though, because she likes the fleece scarf better. You saw that coming, didn’t you?
Of course, I had just started working on a cowl to match her hat and mittens. Will she wear it when it’s finished? Maybe if I line it with fleece.

Last weekend I hit a few church sales that turned out to be a total bust. I decided to stop by Goodwill on the way home just to window shop. (Hey, I was in the neighborhood!) Not only did I find this great sweater, but when I checked out it rang up half price!
I have been thinking of making some Nebraska football inspired (i.e., red, red and more red) accessories for my shop in the Fall. I really like the black and red plied yarn for Husker Blackshirts fans.
recycle: The sweater is a super soft cotton/acrylic blend with perfect seams for unraveling. Score!
So it seems like everyone likes their knitted gifts. I’m so glad! I started last January and made good progress up until summer. I finished up after it got cold again. Everything was in the mail and delivered on time. I think this is a record for me!
These are wrist warmers from Last-Minute Knitted Gifts: ladies’ version. I made a cowl to match using the same spiral rib pattern. The yarn is Patons SWS, which I really love! Michael’s put this on clearance last year right after Christmas and I bought a ton. I have no idea why they stopped carrying it. The colors are so beautiful.
These are wrist warmers from Last-Minute Knitted Gifts: men’s version with matching cowl in Patons SWS. My brother-in-law asked me if I realized that these were really “in” right now. I told him I had my finger on the pulse of the latest knitting trends!
Another set of wrist warmers, but I didn’t have enough to make a circular cowl. I had to knit this one flat and add a button. The purple wool was from my stash, so there was no getting more! Luckily it blocked nicely. The yarn is Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Worsted, the only wool that doesn’t itch its recipient.
Finally, a new hat for my brother — in Virginia Tech colors, of course — and a matching cowl. The hat is Hot Head from Stitch ‘N Bitch and the cowl is a matching 2×2 rib. The yarn is Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Bulky.
project notes: Everything went as planned with these. Next year I’ll be sewing gifts, instead. Guess I better get started soon!
