handmade gifts

Good grief! May is almost half over! You wouldn’t know it by the weather. It feels more like Fall than Spring. Yesterday I realized I’ve got some gift making to do this month. I can’t give too much detail right now, but I’m combining this with some handmade goodies from etsy.com. I’ll do a full reveal after they’ve been gifted.

my creative space

I have this vision of my creative space. In it, there are no piles for my daughter to dig through asking, “Mama, can I use this fabric for a picnic bundle?” She won’t make off with buttons or ribbon from my desk. She definitely won’t be checking out sharp, shiny, pointy objects.

This room doesn’t have a lot of storage space because we sacrificed most of the closet for an angled entry with a french door. Ah, yes. The french door that exposes my works in progress to the rest of the house.

I started this project back in March with a major destash. Since then I’ve been doing little bits in the evenings. Yesterday I got a surge of energy and made some real progress. It took all day. I recycled, donated, rearranged, decluttered and reorganized.

My vision? I think I’m almost there.

Are you sitting down? My creative space is filled with knitting today. Yes, I said knitting. Can you believe it? It’s been awhile.

Our local guild is making squares for charity blankets again. I took a break from this last year, but the year before I met my goal of 12 squares — one a month. I was hoping to meet that goal again in 2010, but here it is almost May and I’m on my first square! We’ll see how many I get done.

There were some lovely creative spaces last week listed on Kirsty’s blog. Did you check them out? You should!

stash and pattern: More acrylic from my thrifted stash. These skeins must multiply when I’m not looking! The patterns are being chosen by the group. This is the January square listed on the Hanks website.

pink fabric for purse

In my creative space today is this beautiful pink fabric. I think it should become a purse. Not a boxy, tote-like bag, but a fancy, dressy purse. It’s got this shiny, metallic thread woven in it that glitters in the sun. It was hard to get a close up, but you can kind of see it here.

It would make a sweet Spring purse, don’t you think?

thrifted: I think this was originally a long, wrap-around skirt. I bought it at a church sale last year and figure it’s about time I did something with it!

spring cleaning and donating

I’m spring cleaning in my creative space today. Three bags of fabric and craft goodies are going to my friend Sarah, who gave me the yarn from last week. I also packed up three bags of clothing that I had planned to upcycle into something else. That’s going to The Mission. I figure there are folks who need those jeans more than I do, and I’ve still got plenty of stash to keep me busy.

I’m already feeling inspired by my uncluttered creative space. Now I’m going to pop over to Kirsty’s blog for more inspiration.

My creative space is full of tiny little stitches. A friend of mine hand stitched this blanket, but doesn’t sew, and asked me to help put it together.

I am amazed at her patience and perfect little stitches.

And check out this cute ruffle trim!

I’ll be sewing the front to a quilted back and adding the trim. I don’t want to machine quilt the two pieces together, so I have to come up with a way to tie or stitch them without interfering with the design. Suggestions welcome!

Creative spaces are hosted by Kirsty in Australia. No matter how early I post mine I always feel a little late to the party because of the time difference. So, I’m going to start posting these on (U.S.) Wednesdays. Now you get an extra day to check out all of the creative goodness!

laptop bag purse

Today my creative space is filled with finishing. I just finished this laptop bag/purse for myself. Hopefully, we’ll get a little sun today so I can get some more pics. I’m also finishing up another tote for an etsy order. Plus, I’ve got to whip up two gift bags for these projects and I’m going to try and fit in a little mending in the evening.

What’s in your creative space today?

I can’t believe it’s Thursday already! I haven’t been able to do as much sewing as I’d like this week, so my creative space is all about my Chromium Star Blanket. I’ve just started the second skein of red yarn and I’m loving how this is shaping up!

Red seems to be the color of choice for a lot of crafty bloggers this week. Check out the comments over at Kirsty’s blog for more creative spaces.

I love the magazine section at our library. Today I’m devouring Country Living, House Beautiful and Dwell. They are due in a few days. Must soak in a little more inspiration before I return them.

I can’t tell you how hard it was to get a picture of this scarf. My family watched as I walked from room to room trying to capture the leaves. I started this scarf on retreat last weekend. It’s my first lace project and I love it. Tonight we’re going to see the Saltdogs at Haymarket Park and I’ll be taking this as my stadium knitting. Isn’t it pretty?
